Glentoran boss Mick McDermott praised the NI Football League for postponing Tuesday’s game against Coleraine.
The highly anticipated Premiership showdown was called off hours before kick-off, in line with NIFL’s Covid case policy.
McDermott believes the governing body took the “reasonable option” to postpone the clash, after Covid-related issues were uncovered at the Glentoran camp.
He told the club website : “From a sporting point of view, we are always disappointed when a match is postponed but we have to understand that we are dealing with something much more important, the life of every person in and around our football clubs.
“Yesterday’s NIFL decision was the only correct one in the face of this unique challenge of match day Covid issues. NIFL’s priority was to protect everyone involved, so the only sensible option was to postpone the match. “
McDermott added: “I thank the NIFL for its swift and objective decision – it was for the greater good. It is imperative that we do the right thing, all the time.”
A new date has yet to be confirmed for the game, which has reportedly seen two fit teams meet at the Showgrounds.
Coleraine are undefeated in their last 16 games in all competitions, while the Glens have gone nine league games unbeaten.
Bannsiders chairman Colin McKendry expressed frustration with the late postponement, but said the health and safety of everyone involved was paramount when making any decisions.
He told the Belfast Telegraph : “The health of the players, officials, management and fans comes first and we must respect it.
“I was on the board that created the Covid-19 case policy and it can be read in two ways.
“Of course, the health and safety aspect is paramount but surely if other players – who have not tested positive or who have been in close contact and who have no symptoms – can play after having had a lateral flow negative?
“It is disappointing that the game had to be postponed as we had sponsors, mascots, ball collectors, social club staff, club store staff and other staff on the day of the game before it was played. ” be informed that it was not played after 2 p.m.
“However, we do realize that there is a new variant of Covid and we wish the affected players at Glentoran a very quick recovery.”
