2 adults accused of assaulting children during youth football match

MANCHESTER, Maryland (AP) – Two adults have been charged with assaulting minors during a brawl at a youth football game in Maryland, police said.

Manchester Police Chief John Hess said Saturday’s recreational game “ended disgustingly” when a melee involving around 30 people broke out, media reported.

Prosecution documents show a woman, whose child was on one of the teams, said an opposing team player used foul language as he left the pitch as a result from an injury, WBAL-TV reported.

She said she told the player to “watch (his) mouth”, according to the documents. The 31-year-old said the coach and players from the other team attacked her and her boyfriend.

An investigation determined that the 32-year-old woman and man beat children from the opposing team. They have both been charged with second degree assault, court records online show. Lawyers who could comment for them were not listed.

A Manchester officer was in the park when the brawl broke out and used pepper spray to calm the crowd before reinforcements arrived from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police.

The Carroll County Youth Football League said in a statement that some people involved have been banned or suspended from the league. The incident is being investigated to see if further action is warranted.

“As a league we don’t take this lightly,” the organization said.
