3 defensive improvements QPR should aim for in January

The Queens Park Rangers have been one of the most exciting teams to follow in the Championship this season with offensive football mark Mark Warburton.

West Londoners have at times sidelined teams with their wealth of attacking talent, but securing them a top six spot this term and a chance to win promotion to the Premier League strengthens their defensive contingent. Rob Dickie could generate some interest in January after his strong performances this season, but even with him in the squad, Rangers can only boast of the 11th best backline in the second tier.

Nice margins can continue to count for a lot in the championship and so adding some defensive reinforcements in January could see QPR turn draws into wins in the second half of the season.

Here, we’ve taken a look at three defensive upgrades QPR should target in January …

Steve cook

According to Football initiate, center-back commanding Steve Cook is an interesting player for QPR next month. Jimmy Dunne and Jordy De Wijs are currently vying for third place in the last three to play between Dickie and Yoann Barbet. Cook, and the experience he would bring, is certainly an improvement for the pair.

At 30, there could also still be some room for improvement with Cook and QPR would gain a player who knows what it takes to be promoted to the Premier League.

Francisco Sierralta

A left-field scream, Francisco Sierralta is currently healing a minor hamstring injury, but had a great impact for Watford in the Championship last season. The 24-year-old won ten caps for Chile and was part of one of the best backlines in league history at Vicarage Road. Sierralta has struggled for consistent playing time with the Hornets this quarter and could be available for a loan change early in the year.

Winston reid

Reid is currently a free agent following his release from West Ham United this summer. The no-frills center-back has 167 Premier League appearances to his name and spent the second half of last season with eventual league playoff final winners Brentford. Staying in London could be an attractive proposition for Reid, who has the potential to expertly fit into the heart of Rangers’ defense.
