Construction of Mount Gilead football pitch and track underwayDistrict to upgrade HVAC systems with grant funds

MOUNT GILEAD — University assistant football coach Mike Reid II stood at the edge of the new football field, which was recently seeded with Bermuda grass. He is excited and excited to start the football season, although play on the new ground will be somewhat delayed due to construction.

Reid said he was a bit of a turf skeptic until Virgil Staley took him to see the Pickerington pitch with Bermuda grass and it was a game-changer for him. Now he is convinced that natural grass will be superior and safer than artificial grass.

At its June 21 meeting, the Mount Gilead School Board approved the school district’s agreement with Plug Smart to replace heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control valves in the amount of $209,736, recommission current equipment and replace and upgrade a chiller at the college/high school for $273,857. Grant funds will be used for relevant work.

An additional $44,676 will be used to replace failed equipment identified during recommissioning using grant funds. (Department of Development for implementing controls upgrades – $200,000 and remaining amounts to use ESSER grant funds.) The amount of $575,000 will be the total grant funds to be used for the project.

Turning to the meeting, the teachers who were approved for the 2022-2023 school year were: Jeremy Barr, long-term high school substitute; Kelsie Fike, third grade teacher at Park Avenue; Eighth-grade math teacher Elle Hempstead, awaiting completion of background; Amanda Martin, permanent high school supply job with $125 a day, Chelsey McChesney’s third-grade teacher at Park Avenue; Dina Snow, permanent replacement with $125 a day.

Staff Summer Program

Sabrina Bolha has been approved for Apex Training/Summer School for summer 2022.

Chiefs Club/SACC program for the summer of 2021-2022: Director at $20 per hour, Erin Whipple; The $15-an-hour assistant directors are Lisa Beck and Amber Dailey.

Additional contracts have been awarded for 2022-23 for Coaches and Assistants in Men’s and Women’s Sports for Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Swimming, Cheer Coach, Bowling, Football and Wrestling . * Molly Clapper was approved as district preschool principal with her annual amount paid by grant.

* The agreement with the Village of Mount Gilead and the school board to implement the School Resource Officer program has been approved for the 2022-2023 school year.

* The Service Agreement between Mount Gilead Schools and Knox Educational Service Center (Knox ESC) has been approved for 2022-2023. The Mid-Ohio Service Center Agreement is due to terminate on June 30, 2022.

* Approved $2,404.10 for the purchase of state winning athlete signs for three street entry points in Mount Gilead Village.

*Estimates have been approved by Strategic Turf Systems, Inc. for $13,799 and Arms Trucking Co., to purchase and transport 175 tons of USGA Spec sand for $7,152.25 for the purchase of sand splitting and aeration of the football field and softball field.

*The board approved the purchase of a 2018 Toro ReelMaster3100D to be used to cut Bermuda’s turf recently installed at the stadium for $30,000.

The next regular board meeting will be July 19, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the school board office.

Grass has been sown on the football pitch with hints of green appearing as sprinklers water the pitch. The new drainage system has been installed and the next steps will include the training ground, track, lighting and scoreboard.
