Going to a BYU away football game this year? Do more than just cheer on the Cougs

Last year, before BYU’s football game at Georgia Southern, alumni, fans and friends donated 910 pounds of food, 200 winter coats and 300 boxes of diapers (among many others items) during a pre-game tailgate. Similar service tailgates have taken place ahead of games against Tennessee (2019), Baylor (2021), and the 2021 Independence Bowl with incredibly generous similar results.

This year, the BYU Alumni team behind the service liftgates decided to expand its operations to hold events at every away football game in 2022. Starting with the USF game this weekend, BYU Alumni, as well that local alumni chapters at each game site, will host “Cougs Care” pregame tailgates that incorporate a service project for local nonprofits.

“BYU alumni are 100% focused on connecting for good. We want to connect our communities, our families, our alumni and our friends – and what’s better than service and a good game of football,” said Michael Johanson, director of the Alumni Association. director. “As long as there are tailgates, we will work to find a way to serve local communities and make a difference wherever we go and wherever we are.”

So far, tailgates are planned to benefit refugee groups, expand literacy programs and provide food and items to communities in need. So whether fans are heading to Tampa, Eugene, Vegas or Lynchburg, BYU Alumni hopes they’ll stop by – with or without a game ticket – to donate to a worthy cause. Here are the details of this season’s events. (Details of later dates will be added as they become available, so be sure to check before each away game.)
