Ian Evatt comments on Antoni Sarcevic’s surprise departure from Bolton Wanderers

In a move that seemed to come out of the blue, Bolton Wanderers captain Antoni Sarcevic resigned from two leagues to join National League big-spenders Stockport County.

The 29-year-old has appeared in every league game so far for the Trotters this season, starting in all but one and scoring three goals after playing a significant role in their promotion campaign in 2020-21.

That no-start was against Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night in a game the Wanderers lost 3-0, and days later the midfielder headed across Greater Manchester to join the Hatters.

Quiz: Did these 25 Bolton Wanderers transfers actually take place?

Nicolas Anelka is Bolton’s record signing

True

False

Sarcevic played for Stockport-based club Woodley Sports after being released from Manchester City as a teenager.

Reports It emerged that Sarcevic and Bolton boss Ian Evatt had had a fit after the loss to Argyle this week and whatever the case, something seems to have happened to trigger this surprise change.

There was no comment from Evatt on the fallout as he took Bolton official website to discuss Sarcevic’s departure.

“He did a wonderful job helping us get promoted and then quickly gain a foothold in League One this time around.” Evatt noted.

“It’s a new challenge for him, we wish him every success in the future.

“We think we still have great competition for midfield spots and that also allows us to look to the future and potentially strengthen the squad in January where we feel needed if we can.”

The verdict

Evatt will want to focus fully on his team’s game with Gillingham this weekend, so it may be very wise not to air out dirty laundry before that.

But it does look like there was something going on after the Plymouth game that saw Sarcevic go from club captain to Stockport player within 72 hours.

Bolton fans don’t seem too convinced the club have enough depth in midfield to last until the January transfer window, one of them being George Thomason who was playing in the depths outside of the league until January 2020.

More details could emerge from Evatt or Sarcevic in the coming days, but for now there are no disputes to officially report.
