Michal Helik reacts amid Barnsley’s alarming start to the season

Barnsley were one of the most notable teams in the 2020/21 championship season and would have hoped to build on that this year.

Instead, they were drawn into a relegation battle at the other end of the table, but defender Michal Helik has told the Yorkshire Post that his team can still “perform” in the championship.

The 26-year-old has always been a part of Barnsley’s first team so far this campaign, playing 12 games for the team and struggling hard to try and get a result in all of them.

So far, however, the second tier squad have struggled to replicate the same kind of form that got them into the playoffs last season.

In fact, they haven’t won a league game since their draw against Coventry in August and that means that rather than looking to the Premier League, they now face the prospect of a downgrade to League One if the things are going to.

Quiz: Did these 25 Barnsley transfers actually take place?

Brad Collins arrived at Oakwell after his Chelsea contract expired. True or false?

With four losses in a row and another key Middlesbrough game to come midweek for Barnsley, defender Helik has now spoken about his squad and believes they have the quality in their squad to be able to get out of their current rut and away from relegation. Speaking at the Yorkshire Post, Helik said: “It’s harder to be confident when you lose games, but we know we still have good quality in the squad and we can perform.

“But we have to perform well to score and not concede to break this losing path, and I hope with a little more confidence that we can take the win.”

If they could get three much needed points on Boro on Wednesday night, then that might be just the boost they need to finally kick off their season and come out of the last three. Lose, however, and confidence will inevitably be at a new low.

The next matches will therefore be crucial for the team, but Helik believes they have the capacity to start winning.

The verdict

Michal Helik himself has looked solid at the back and is one of the bright spots in a sorry season for Barnsley so far. After the peaks of last year, fighting at the bottom of the table will be a blow to the whole team and its fans.

They did manage to be among the greats in the last campaign, however, and even though they lost key players and their manager, there is still some of that quality as the defender has said he can achieve victories. They will have to start soon, however, if they are to avoid falling further behind in the championship.
