From staff reports

SEVEN SPRINGS – Spring Creek Middle School spoiled a perfect season offer on the football field and moved to a post victory in his very first .500 season in football in the Wayne County Middle School game Athletic Conference last week.

Sweet revenge.

Osiel Santiago scored the only goal for the Gators in a 1-0 victory over Norwayne, who had previously won the WCMSAC regular season championship.

However, the Gators (9-3-0 overall) spoiled the Cobras’ offer for a perfect season. The visitors left with a 10-1-1 worksheet.

Each team got a strong performance from their respective goalkeeper. Jesus Barajas Barrera recorded six saves for the Gators between the pipes, while Gabe Pena recorded eight saves for the Cobras.

SC head coach Carl Whittington said eighth-graders Santiago and Barrera were the two leftovers from the 2019 schedule before the COVID-19 outbreak forced the 2020 season to be canceled.

South County rivals Spring Creek and Mount Olive fought a scoreless draw for more than 3 quarters in their grid battle.

The teams traded six turnovers in the second half.

Spring Creek took advantage of the last two errors and won 12-0 on a cloudy and windy afternoon.

A salvage fumble led to Darius Deal’s 43-yard touchdown throw to Jayleen Hocutt, who staggered her wobbly pass and came down the sideline into the end zone.

In the possession that followed, Hocutt intercepted a pass from Mount Olive and sent it 55 yards from home when time expired.

The Gators (3-4 overall) returned home Tuesday for their regular season final against Brogden. The Chargers (2-4) have concluded their 2021 campaign in Grantham.
